" I am never frustrated or disappointed dealing with people in China"

Masters of cross-cultural performance say this after they have developed a ‘Mindset for China Business’, and YOU CAN TOO!

I WAS WRONG!

I thought 15 years of prior experience in Greater China plus 100% fluency in Mandarin Chinese overqualified me to lead a reorganization in APAC region that included China.

I was myopic and lacked awareness and empathy when I received my first permanent ‘China expat’ assignment in 2011.

MY CHINA STORY

"I am the King of Asia!"

My key local manager in China acted as my personal concierge, strategic adviser, and China business consultant all rolled up into one.

Whatever I wanted, needed, and or even hinted at was immediately offered.  I trusted and empowered him!

On the surface, the honeymoon ever ended…

Below the surface, I was myopic while I was slowly being sabotaged.

My local manager needed to protect corrupt activities that he knew I would be able to uncover given my local China experience and language capabilities.

He led me down a labyrinth of embarrassing proposals while simultaneously planting seeds throughout different parts of the organization that slowly degraded my reputation and credibility.

By the time I realized his clandestine activities, there was no winning strategy for me to continue.

I quietly negotiated an amicable separation and began a new journey to quantify the “lessons learned” and develop training systems to help other China expats and global leaders to solve them.

I call these “unexpected disappointments” China Leadership Dilemmas (CLDs).
