Western definition of FAIR = to be free from bias, dishonesty, or injustice (which is generally based on the law and legal precedence)
Chinese characters meaning FAIR = 公平 (gōngpíng)
• 公 means public, collectively owned, common
• 平 means equal, calm, peaceful
In other words, Chinese traditionally view FAIRNESS as something that is collectively shared in a peaceful manner.
CONTEXT - As Chinese society transitions toward capitalism, with fewer goods distributed by its rulers, individual expectations have evolved to what appears more selfish with regards to FAIRNESS.
